Styx are US Rock legends. Their name became synonymous with the symphonic orchestrated rock format that was to later termed 'Pomp Rock'. Styx's status was such that they hold the record for being the first ever band to gain triple platinum honors with four consecutive album releases! The band's cooperation with Contemporary Youth Orchestra (made up of 115 musicians aged between 15 and 19 years old) started last year when the band was asked to join the Orchestra for a concert. On May 25, 2006, Styx took the stage in Cleveland for a new venture accompanied by the 115 piece Contemporary Youth Orchestra and a 60 member chorus. With a setlist that combined some of the band's classics, two brand new songs and more. Frontiers. 2006

Cyclorama is an unexpectedly appealing comeback. Sure, there’s still no shortage of excessively filigreed keyboard and guitar passages, anthemic choruses that make Queen sound laid back, and at least one song (the nearly seven-minute "These Are the Times") that threatens to summon the spirit of Stonehenge-era Spinal Tap. Yet, somehow, all that is forgiven once Styx sneaks up on you with the killer hooks of the Tenacious D-assisted "Kiss Your Ass Goodbye," a power-pop gem with the verve of classic Cheap Trick. It’s these and other small pleasures--Brian Wilson’s sumptuous vocal arrangement on a reprise of "Fooling Yourself (Palm of Your Hands)," Billy Bob Thornton’s guttural yowling on "Bourgeois Pig," and of course an appearance by John Waite (without whom no classic-rock party is complete)--that weaken your resistance to even the maudlin sentiments of "Yes I Can" (which, sorry to say, has nothing to do with the Sammy Davis Jr. autobiography whose title it shares). Will Cyclorama inspire a revisionist respect for the band at its commercial peak? Probably not. But it does prove that Styx have more than enough musical vitality to transcend their peers on the casino and county fair circuit. --Bill Forman

Arch Allies: Live at Riverport

OK, so maybe arena rock is now amphitheater rock, but beyond that, little has changed for two bands that epitomized the grandiose, hard-on-the-outside, soft-on-the-inside style. Recorded in June 2000 at St. Louis's Riverport Amphitheater, this double-disc set--one for Styx, one for REO--offers spirited versions of the old chestnuts that still delight their hardcore fans. There are a couple of drawbacks here: for one, both Styx's "Blue Collar Man" and REO's "Roll with the Changes" each appear three times on the collection--once each by the original band and once on each disc as a collaboration. Surely they could have dusted off a few more tunes. And while REO offers only tried and true material, Styx sticks in two cuts from 1999's Brand New World and one from 1990's Edge of the Century, which really can't be the tunes that convinced fans to pay seven dollars for parking. Those caveats aside, the tight performances and good sound quality should please longtime fans and the three newcomers alike. After all, where better to record arena rock than in an amphitheater? --Marc Greilsamer

While not exactly a return to form, the first studio record since 1983 by the classic Styx trio of Dennis DeYoung, Tommy Shaw, and James Young will undoubtedly please hard-core fans. There's nothing here on the level of "Come Sail Away," "Miss America," or "Lady," but that trademark combination of thrilling, arty hard-rock sounds and gently swooping, full-blown ballads continues. Dennis DeYoung's crazily high-pitched voice still hovers admirably in the castrato range for the most part, though time has introduced a few rough edges. In grand art-rock tradition, the record's supposedly got something to do with futurist British scribe Aldous Huxley (one of classic rockers' favorites), but if anything will bother the listener, that's not it. Songs such as "Number One" reveal an attempt by the band to update their sound with newer variations on hard rock; the result is less than satisfying. When they stick to the old formula, as with "I Will Be Your Witness" and "While There's Still Time," it's like grunge never happened, which is what this nearly-30-year-old act are supposed to sound like. --Mike McGonigal

The Grand Illusion

More than two decades before it became Eric Cartman's favorite song on South Park, "Come Sail Away" was the choice of music fans with one foot in the art-rock camp and the other in Top 40 pop. The Grand Illusion straddled the seemingly divergent directions as only Styx could, laying on the pomp with layers of keyboards and high-flown lyrical conceits, yet keeping the proceedings light with hook-filled choruses and breezy melodies. Tommy Shaw's engaging "Fooling Yourself (The Angry Young Man)" is the set's highlight, offering a bit of armchair psychology even as it acted as a subtle dig at the snarling punk rockers to whom Styx was anathema. James Young's "Miss America" rocks out, while Dennis DeYoung's title track reminds us that life is fleeting and illusory. Not exactly Nietzsche, but you can dance to it, sort of. --Daniel Durchholz

One album before Styx cut loose with an honest-to-goodness concept album, Kilroy Was Here, they flirted with the idea on Paradise Theater. The concept here has something to do with the decline of America in the '70s, based on the condemnation and destruction of the Paradise Theater, a famous showplace in the band's hometown of Chicago. Truth be told, the concept hasn't held together that well, though the individual songs have, led by the optimistic ballad "The Best of Times," and the rockers "Too Much Time on My Hands" and "Snowblind." Dennis DeYoung gives some of his most theatrical performances throughout, presaging his overly ambitious Kilroy concept, but also his successful run performing in the legitimate theater, as Pontius Pilate in Jesus Christ Superstar. Paradise, meanwhile, was about as good as it got for Styx. --Daniel Durchholz

In some ways, Styx was America's answer to Queen. The Chicago quintet never ascended to the ranks of rock-and-roll royalty, as did their English counterparts, nor are they held in as high a regard today. Nevertheless, Styx fulfilled a Midwestern American hunger for high-flown fantasy typified on Pieces of Eight with songs like Dennis DeYoung and James Young's "I'm Okay" and "Lords of the Rings," with their elaborate arrangements, soaring vocal harmonies, and lyrical pretensions. In quite another direction, guitarist Tommy Shaw writes about basic human needs and working-class values in "Blue Collar Man," while his song "Sing for the Day" is a pleasant air, and "Renegade" a hard-charging rocker. Styx may have seemed somewhat schizophrenic on Pieces of Eight but their legions of fans diminished not a whit, making the album the band's second multiplatinum effort in a row, following The Grand Illusion.--Daniel Durchholz

If Styx didn't do enough to endear itself to a generation of prom-goers with its 1975 slow-dance classic "Lady," they closed the deal a few years later with Cornerstone's premiere hit, "Babe." Perhaps the prototypical I-love-you-but-I-just-gotta-go power ballad, the song was Styx's first No. 1 hit, and it propelled the album to platinum-plus status. Led by that track as well as "Why Me," another Top 40 hit, Cornerstone is Styx at their most accessible and melodic. The album experiments with some new sounds as well, with horns added to the mix on Dennis DeYoung's "Borrowed Time" and "Why Me" and mandolin on Tommy Shaw's "Boat on the River." If their album sales didn't offer the final word on the band's popularity at the close of the '70s, a 1979 Gallup poll did the trick: The group was named America's most popular rock band. It's you babe, indeed. --Daniel Durchholz

2-On-1 of Styx's first two A&M records that were originally released in 1975-76. Equinox produced Styx's first single with A&M, the highly spirited 'Lorelei', which found its way to number 27 on the charts. Although it was the only song to chart from Equinox, the album itself is a benchmark in the band's career since it includes an instrumental nature reminiscent of their early progressive years, yet hints toward a more commercial-sounding future in its lyrics. After Equinox, guitarist John Curulewski parted ways with the band, replaced by Tommy Shaw, who debuted on 1976's Crystal Ball album. Crystal Ball wasn't as successful as Equinox, but it was a better album, showcasing Styx's increased skill for crafting simple, catchy pop hooks out of their bombastic sound. Both titles have been digitally remastered. BGO Records. 2006.

The Very Best of Supertramp

In the midst of the late 1970s punk/new wave revolution, England's Supertramp tore a page from the Genesis playbook, suffusing their previously overwrought prog-rock influences and bittersweet hippie optimism gone sour with muscular pop hooks. They eventually became one of the world's foremost rock acts--and later a rich source for contemporary TV commercial music. But while Supertramp peaked quickly, they nonetheless spawned at least two bona fide classic albums--Crime of the Century and Breakfast in America--and a slate of FM radio staples, all of which are included on this near 80-minute anthology. Fully three-quarters of Crime is represented, and rightly so. That 1974 album both stripped down and reinvented the band's sound, centering it around the songs of Rick Davies and Roger Hodgson, pulsing electric piano chords, and distinctively reedy vocals on tense, spare songs like "Bloody Well Right" and "Dreamer." But by the time of the multiplatinum Breakfast, they had refined their edgy prog sensibility to virtual extinction with well-crafted pop hits like "The Logical Song" and "Take the Long Way Home." This well-chosen collection spans a decade, but focuses intently on the five great years that cemented Supertramp's reputation. --Jerry McCulley
The fact that it includes such diverse fare as Copland's 'Fanfare For The Common Man' & George Clinton's 'After You Leave Me' alongside the original 'Best Thing' seemingly indicates the Chicagoans had a taste for experimenting and an unknowing sense of humor that vanished during their stadium rock dynasty of the late '70s & early '80s.

Brave New World

Styx/Gold: Come Sail Away

Styx may have had their musical roots in the UK's burgeoning late-'60s/early-'70s prog-rock bombast, but they were true pioneers in at least one sense: The Chicago-bred quintet virtually defined the hugely successful "corp rock" boom that followed a decade after prog's original fortunes tarnished. And if that label suggests a certain sense of the formulaic, in Styx it actually denoted a band with sharp ears and a shrewder sense of rock history, attested to immediately here by the Yes-inspired harmonies of "You Need Love" and the staccato rhythms of the Beatles' "Getting Better" on "Winner Take All." This 35-track double-disc anthology charts a course from sudden fame to its sometimes stormy aftermath, spanning the band's 1972 debut and its resilient 2003 comeback contender, Cyclorama. But after working their way up from the Grand Funk-worthy, meat 'n' instant potatoes of "Rock and Roll Feeling" and bald-faced melodramatics of "Lady" and "Come Sail Away" to the gutsier edge of "Blue Collar Man" and "Too Much Time on My Hands," rising tides of punk and new wave began to erode their younger demographic. And by the time "Babe" gave way to the faux techno of '83's "Mr. Roboto," even those sympathetic to the band's hook-rich, prog-lite sensibility seemed restless. Still, their Tommy Shaw-dominate output in the '90s and beyond showcased a band that had subtly matured from their arena-rock cliché salad days. --Jerry McCulley
